About Johnny Dread
Born Juan Carlos Guardiola in Philadelphia to Cuban immigrant parents, Johnny Dread moved to Miami at a young age, where his athletic dedication earned him a full basketball scholarship to Florida International University (FIU). A profound pivot redirected his path from sports to music as he embraced Rastafari culture.
In 1986, he co-founded the band Copacetic, releasing the Billboard-charting album Ghetto Rock. Launching his solo career in 1990, Dread traveled to Jamaica to record his debut solo album, Scarecrow, followed by acclaimed works like Full Circle. A self-taught multi-instrumentalist, he has shared stages worldwide with reggae legends such as The Wailers, Third World, and Burning Spear, headlining major international festivals across Europe, the Americas, and Africa, including landmark performances in Ethiopia and Kenya.
Blending classic roots reggae with cross-cultural influences, Johnny Dread remains a vibrant global ambassador for the genre, continually honoring his heritage through powerful music and storytelling.
